Popseoul vs. Seoulbeats

August 21, 2008

So, most of you lovely people invested in Korean pop culture must have heard about the infamous Korean gossip blog Popseoul, right? I’ll bet you guys even read it religiously back in the day, didn’t you? You know you did. <3

I certainly did. I’ll even admit that at one point in time, I actually thought the authors were witty and not, y’know, downright cruel in their remarks. But recently, after the even more notorious split between the co-authors of the blog (there’s apparently a lot of drama in the blogging world), I’ve taken to following both the original Popseoul (owned by the Korean sista) and the newly-formed Seoulbeats (owned by the American counterpart). Now, obviously, there are pros and cons to both. I’ll start with Seoulbeats.

 Seoulbeats:

I find the layout of the site itself really really nice. It’s got that minimalist look – clean, precise coding; extensive use of thumbnails and borders; straight lines; and most importantly, the proper use of capitals (I’m a grammar nazi. Whatcha gonna do about dat?). What I really like though, is that their mainpage contains their ten most recent entries, complete with thumbnails, mini preview, date and name of author. This makes it EXTREMELY easy to pick and choose the articles that interest you, rather than having to scroll down millions of entries until you find one that’s witty AND interesting enough. As a result, very little scrolling obviously equates to a user-friendly site.

Additionally, the entries are short and sweet – great for someone who just wants the deets with a spoonful of sarcasm for good measure. It takes a maximum of five minutes to read through ten entries, which is all the time I have really for this sort of thing. Furthermore, I really like their image functions. Clicking on a thumbnail doesn’t open up the enlargened image in a new window, in a new tab or in the same tab, but on a different page (therefore requiring the use of the “back” button to return to the original entry). Rather, it opens on the same page - similar to those ads that pop up and overlay the page you’re currently perusing – getting rid of it requires the simple click of the “x” symbol, without the hassle of pressing the back button and waiting for your entry, complete with comments, to reload all over again. (Do forgive my inability to explain - the technical terms aren’t coming to me, at the mo).

In any case, the real gem lies in Seoulbeat’s team of writers. That’s right – it’s no one-(wo)man show. By my count, there are approximately 8 writers, assuming that Ms. Seoulbeats is an actual writer (though she’s given no profile) and probably the American counterpart herself, and that CiaoCiao is going to continue writing, even though s/he’s written … one entry so far? In any case, six of the writers have profiles up on the “About” page, and they’re rather fun to read.

Last but not least, I’m liking the new categories being introduced, most likely a means of differentiating the site from Popseoul. In any case, with a team of writers from all sorts of backgrounds, Seoulbeats not only brings wit to the table, but, dare I say, some rather intellectual thoughts as well. In any case, the fashion entries are a gem to read.

Edit: I just posted my first comment on the site, and OMG, you can edit your comments. I’m SO sick of not being able to edit my comments on gossip blogs, so this is a blardy nice change. THANK YOU for adding that function (or for establishing a domain that has that function).

Popseoul:

While Seoulbeats IS making its way up, it’s not always up-to-date. Popseoul does overshadow it in terms of number of current articles (however relevant they may be). It seems that this Korean sista (or sistas) spend(s) ALL her time on the website; it feels like it’s updated on an hourly basis – impressive for a seemingly one-woman show. Still, I’m not too sure whether there’s only one writer or multiple – we, as readers, aren’t given the privilege of reading the profiles of the different writers, should there be more than one.

The site could do with a category clean-up. Honestly, the number of categories lengthens the page by an insane amount and to find a certain category, one encounters scrolling of Olympic proportions. Ridiculous.

Additionally, I’ve found petty grammar mistakes that, although unnoticeable by most, decrease the quality of the writing. Furthermore, it’s important to note that there IS a difference between wit and cruelty. The two shouldn’t be interchangeable. Still, I’d say that the site was at its worse when BOTH writers were writing together. Now, while there is the occasional snarky remark, it’s still loads of fun to read.

Also, Popseoul could work on previewing its entries, rather than have them all load on the same page, which takes an eternity and a half at times. I know pictures say a thousand words, but under the cut, please and thanks.

And, just a note to Popseoul commenters, GET OVER YOURSELF. Some of your comments are disgusting, and actually make me disgusted to be in your company. Honestly, after reading that a Korean’s not only WON a gold medal, but set a new world record, most of you can only say, “GROSS”, “SHE’S UGLY!”, “OMG, GROSS GROSS GROSS. I CAN’T SAY ANYTHING ELSE BUT GROSS”. Please, diss her only after you’ve won a gold medal at the Olympic Games, after you’ve set a new world record, and after YOU have a long list of accomplishments to your name. Sure, she might not be the prettiest thing, but it ain’t in her job description to be beautiful. Plus, you try being skinny as heck AND lifting 326 kg. It’d crush you, which’d give you the PERFECT excuse to plasticize yourself, right?

And please, do post a picture up of yourself so you can get a taste of your own medicine.

Both:

Credit your sources. Trust me, you’ll seem that much more credible when you do. Examples to follow: Dramabeans and Coolsmurf.

Famous Last Thoughts:

Both are decent and fun sources of info on Korean popculture. The writers are good (enough), witty/sarcastic (enough), and don’t take themselves too seriously, which is always craploads of fun for the reader.

Thanks for the good reads, gals (and maybe a guy or two?)!

  1. I personally prefer seoulbeats more, mainly because a lj-friend of mine is a writer there and also the site is much more easier to go through. I’ve always kind of hated popseoul for their anti-Super Junior sentiment and constant bashing. Being witty is one thing, but being straight-out hateful is something completely different so I’ve never been a regular visitor on PS. So far, I’m really liking seoulbeats a lot more.

    I did here about something related to the PS sisters but I’m not quite sure what went down. Apparently the one who left started SB right? *lost* ^^;

Would that be allthingsgood of Popfestfun fame? I’ve a niggling little feeling that she’s Daysgoby on Seoulbeats, though I’m not really sure, due to the investigating!failure! that I am.

While Seoulbeats’ site is that much more customer-friendly, I still have to give Popseoul credit for their fast and numerous updates – that’s probably the only thing Seoulbeats is lacking in. Still, a lot of Popseoul’s updates are kinda … irrelevant, and A LOT come out of Magazines.

Yeah, the one who left started SB. The two had some kind of fight, one changed the administrative passwords, the other couldn’t access the new database, but still had access to the old database, so she wrote a post explaining everything (well, from her point of view) and they both lost a huge bunch of commenters.

In any case, I’ll keep up with both, until the credibility of one of them is compromised. In that case, I’ll ditch. XD

Oh yeaaaaaah, I’m hungup_onyou on livejournal, so if I randomly add you one day, it’s ACTUALLY ME!

  3. I love them. It’s funny, because you’ll get some really crazy fans and they’ll all be like, “YO WHY YOU DISSIN RAIN HE’S HOT” and I’ll be like, “… it’s Popseoul. You knew it was coming.”

I’m sort of loyal to Popseoul. Okay, and that I subsribe to their feeds so I get their emails. The comments are always the best part. I spend most of my lunch hour at work perusing through the comments. I love the satire, really I do. It’s just… fun.

although I think the cattier former-Popseoul “sista” is the one that left Popseoul. Popseoul used to have some really good entries (like grammatically), but recently they’ve been pretty bad. But the content themselves have been much more subtle and wittier of later, rather than a handful of catty ranting (like Allkpop can get like sometimes). I like the new turn on Popseoul. I’ll check out Seoulbeats though. If it has as many writers as you say it does, it’ll probably be more broad. =DD

Welcome back! Although, to be honest, I can’t believe you just blogged an ENTIRE post about Popseoul vs. Seoulbeats. LOL. Then again, I ranted quite long about how I want Chace Crawford to be Edward Cullen. lol.

  4. hey there,

thanks for the review – we’re still working on improving our site and we’ll take your suggestions into consideration

    enjoy your labor day weekend!

  5. Yep you’re right allthingsgood = daysgoby :P P I figured that out too.

Also, I DIDNT KNOW U STILL BLOGGED HERE DD:

Anyway, bbl to read coz I’m doing hw :D

  6. Yeah, I think it was a good idea for the authors to split because popseoul has become less bitchy (even if a little boring at times). And if they hadn’t had split, seoulbeats wouldve never been created. I do agree with seoulbeats not being updated as much. Considering they have, what 8x the no. of authors? (or so we assume), they only post a few articles a day. Sometimes even less.

p.s have you seen the “sitemap” on seoulbeats? I was on that page for about 10 minutes just playing around with the tags, rofl XDD

  7. NANSHI!!!

GAH, I’ve missed your comments. <3

Magic Feet’s Popseoul’s absolute favourite person to diss, and it’s because he’s been such a whackjob when it comes to handling his own career. I mean, JYP did a fantastic job of handling his popularity, but Rain’s just letting it slide in his attempt to cross over to Hollywood.

Which really shouldn’t be done until you can speak EXCELLENT English, so that people CAN’T mock you because you’re TOO GOOD.

I mean, Perez Hilton would have a BLAST on his site with Rain. And come to think of it, so would I.

I, for one, hate the comments on Popseoul. Sure, it’s totally great when the readers get into their little snits and begin arguing about SNSD vs Wondergirls or some other boring topic, but usually, their comments are so … blase and useless. People should outlaw “first” as a comment, because honestly, it doesn’t add to the topic in any way, and me likey some substance in what I read.

Don’t even get me started on AllKPop. The site IS catty, and not witty in the least. I find it ridiculously hard to get through any of their entries, though I’ll admit, the comments left on the site are amusing to read.

Yum, Chace Crawford. I think he’d make an amazing Edward Cullen.

… Lookswise, at least. I’ve no clue how good an actor he is, considering he’s got … Gossip Girl to his name. And, oh look, he’s in a horror movie, too!

  8. seoulbeats

Hey, no problem! Your site’s a gem to read, albeit less current. But you’re just starting up as a new gossip blog, so it’s understandable that it’ll take a while before you’re running as smoothly as possible.

    Keep it up, though!

  9. ccbaby!

Haha, I update this blog when I’ve something nonsensical to say. Or some entry I want to popularize. I mean, Popseoul and Seoulbeats aren’t my friends on LJ, so it’s unlikely they’ll ever read my review if I post it up on my personal blog.

No, I’ve not checked out the sitemap yet (I hate sitemaps), but I s’pose I’ll check it out.

And yes, with 8 (give or take) authors, it’d be nice if they could update more frequently. But as a new blog just starting up, I’m not holding them guilty for it. I trust that they’ll smooth out the kinks given a few more months.

  10. This is ciaociao.

I wanted to set the record straight that I will continue to write for Seoulbeats.

Also, I’ve started my own site.
    http://www.iheartkimchi.wordpress.com

    Hope y’all enjoy my writing.

  11. lol they’re both crappy. Seoulfull ftw.

And Coolsmurf too.. but then he traded his soul for Allkpop :\

    • asdf

Ooohhh, I’ve never heard of Seoulfull. Thanks for the tip – will defs check it out! :)

Yeahh, I haven’t been keeping up with either gossip blog lately – I’ve traded them for Dramabeans and Coolsmurf. Well, until he joined Allkpop. (And boy, do my sentiments match yours.)

  12. Seoulbeats for me!!!!
