Mean Girl Ah Chu.
July 13, 2008I’m currently about twenty-seven minutes and one second into the first episode of Mean Girl Ah Chu, and I’m really not too sure what to think of it. Yes, I’m a sucker for romantic comedies, which this drama sets itself up to be, but the rather dry synopsis on Dramawiki (found here) doesn’t exactly sound too enticing.
Need I also mention the twelve-year age difference between the hero and heroine of the show? That’s right. Twelve. Now, I dunno about you, but I find a thirty-two-year-old attempting to act as a college freshman, while not surprising in the least, to be rather disconcerting. I mean, he looks like an individual in his mid-thirties and certainly not like a naive exchange student in his mid-twenties (or so) excited to be starting his first year of college. As is evident, I’m REALLY not a fan of actors OR actresses in their early thirties (but more so actors, as they usually look much more mature for their ages) attempting to act a decade or more younger than they really are, especially if they’re paired up with an actor/actress who’s ACTUALLY a decade younger than they are.
The thing is, I like Sam Wang (I find him to be absolutely adorable), and I figure he’s been in ENOUGH dramas that extol the credibility of his acting to stay away from teenage-focussed dramas such as these. I GET IT – he’s a good actor and he can pull it off, but I’m still extremely uncomfortable having him act much younger than he really is. Even if he DOES have a kid-friendly image to retain, acting in more mature roles with a more mature image will only serve to bring him additional fans who, up until now, haven’t been so impressed with his acting experience.
In any case, I’m probably in no position to be writing this, as I have yet to finish the first episode of the show, which, I’ll admit, may continue to surprise me. Unfortunately, I’m notorious for being incredibly impatient with and uncommitted to dramas, which has resulted in me not finishing a single drama in the two or so years that I’ve been watching them. (I’m sad to say that I have yet to watch every single episode of Nobuta wo Produce – I skipped one or two episodes midway through the show - although I proclaim it to be one of my most coveted and utmost favourite dramas of all time.) Nonetheless, I feel the need to give this show a chance – if not for stellar acting, then at least for a chance to ridicule.
(And if you’ve ever a chance, watch Dal Ja’s Spring! It’s probably also one of my fave dramas of all time - tied with NwP for its stellar acting, cute moments and great eye-candy. Honestly, the lead actor, while not great-looking at first, totally grows on you. It’s his suavity, I tell you. I lurve me a suave man.)

LOL. The irony is that one of Shaowei contemporaries (Ming Dao) actually pulls off playing a high schooler brilliantly (it’s the hair, I tell ya) whereas, Sam always just looks very old and mature. I actually felt that he was a pretty weak actor, especially in comparison to MD. Or maybe that’s just because I’ve watched so many eps of him on variety shows (and how they always talk about his NGs and how he can’t remember lines, or act, or… cry. LOL) that I find it hard to believe he’s an actor. LOL.. iono what it is about him… hehe.
I just really haven’t found any dramas lately to watch… so I’ve just been watching old eps of Will & Grace, even though I’m pretty hooked on Fated to Love You right now…!!

Kay, turns out that because Shaowei’s character’s not exactly the most intelligent boy (he’s always been in last place, regardless of studying), he’s had to start all over again as a college freshman, but in another city. Still, he can’t be THAT old if he’s repeating college again, right? (I place him in his mid-twenties AT MOST.) Ergo, Sam’s STILL playing a character close to a decade younger who’ll eventually be cavorting around with a twenty-year-old.
… EW.
Ming Dao seems ageless. I started watching Prince Turns to Frog (haven’t finished it yet, because I’ve got commitment issues XD), and he still looked really young for a twenty-five-year old. It makes me rather jealous, actually.
My friend just got me hooked on REBA of all things. REBA.
… Haha, you and CC both. I’ll admit that Ethan IS rather good-looking, which is enough to get me started on the show … in another year or two.
I remember watching Magicians of Love and being all DDD: when I found out the age difference b/t Mingdao and Joanne. I think she was 17 or 18 when she filmed that? Or was she 16? Lol okay whatever but omg TWELVE??
It’s not really the age gap but more the fact that Sam is acting as a character at least 10 yrs younger? I’m sure they could’ve found another actor for this and another role for Sam :S :S :S
I used to looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove Sam Wang. Seriously, I was OBSESSED. But I really don’t like Joanne’s “acting”. I don’t think I finished Magicians of Love….can’t remember XD
I just started Yamapi’s “Code Blue”. Watched 20 minutes of it, then got annoyed with the girl and closed it XD But apparently it’s really good, so maybe I’ll try finish the first episode tonight XD
BTW, what happened to your prom post
just a heads up, the drama itself isn’t all that exciting. IMHO that is.
CCSweetie
Yeah, twelve years is … a little excessive, though I’ve read somewhere that Minho can handle a gf up to 13 years his senior. FHDJFHADFJ REALLY. That’s … a massive age difference – one I’m not sure even maturity can overcome.
EXACTLY. I don’t think he’s the best actor for this. Not only is he too old, his credentials, imo, hold him above this. And sure, he might’ve wanted to do a relaxing show, but honestly, the drama seems SO much more unrealistic with him in it. No offense.
… Magicians of Love?! My friend told me to go watch it, cos apparently, it’ll make me cry like mad. So, imma go watch it to work my tear buds. XD

I tried opening your e-card, and my computer totally almost crashed on me. BUT THANKS FOR IT ANYWAY! I’ll definitely try reading it again later, because I really want to know what you wrote (prob some spazzy message, right? XD)
Sam Wang is actually ADORABLE. His smile totally blows me away. Can’t say the same for Joanne – she exaggerates excessively, which is a slight turn-off, although her role asks for it.
… Yamapi has a new drama out? Really? Seriously, that boy’s too skinny now – I remember when he was all nice and chubby and totally huggable.
… If I hug him now, I think I’ll break him. In half. Because I’m probably bigger than he is.
MY PROM POST ROFLMAO. I really want to write it. I do. But I’m so freaking lazy right now that it’s taking a massive amount of will AND mindpower to actually go to summer school. Everyday. At 7:30 in the morning. *bangs head against wall*

I’m actually ridiculously honoured you decided to comment on my blog. I’ve been stalking yours as of late, and your Fated to Love You synopses are fantastic! I love how concise they are, yet you get your points across, the main storyline across and you do it WONDERFULLY. (I actually sit there and read some of your sentences over and over again, because I find them to be GREAT, and I totally wish I could write as well as you.)
… Yeah, I’ve stopped watching it already. The first episode definitely wasn’t an attention-grabber, and I’ve got better things to do with my time than waste it on a show that’s really uninteresting.
i was big crazy fan of shaowei after i watched magicians of love! i started off as a 5566 fan but did not take notice of him as he was underrated.
his acting skills only began to really show after magicians of love!and trust me, i love that show to bits and pieces!!! i think he was extremely cute and cool in that show!
i watched mean girl ah chu and stopped after sometime because the show was getting really draggy,boring and noisy.it’s not an interesting show to start off with but i watched it for the sake of shaowei.ahaha. my love for him is diminishing!! O;

People keep saying “Magicians of Love” is a FANTASTIC show, so I believe I’ll be watching it sometime soon (sometime soon being … a month away). And yeah, I see what you mean about him being underrated. He never seems to be the main character, which may be why people never take notice of him. It’s probably why *I* never took notice of him before – he was never the MAIN MAIN MAIN character, and those are the only characters I take notice of
sadly enough. The show started dragging even during the first episode. I crave excitement – not feigned crap.
Ahhhh, your love for him could never diminish. I mean, how GREAT does he pull off that preppy vest he wore the first episode?
Thanks for commenting, love!
Fantastic show? Magicans of Love? Really?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess xP
Yamapi is a twig atm, but his hair is so cute. So frizzy and ragdoll like XD
Omg, you’ve got class at SEVEN THIRTY?? In the MORNING????? O_____________________O But at least you’re doing something worthwhile, I’ve just been eating and sleeping XD
Ooo, try my e-card again. It’s not the prettiest thing ^^||| but I wrote a nice message ;P
if you are craving wang shao wei and also want more of chen qiao en aside from FTLY, you can watch a game about love. it’s literal translation is rock paper scissor. a tear jerk i must say. not that i really recommend it, but it shows a different side to shao wei as an actor.
and, thanks for your compliments!

I need better nicknames. XD
Well, all my
drama-watching, non-white-washedfriends have been like: “YOU MUST WATCH, TIS AWESUM, I CRIED AT EVERY SINGLE EPISODE.I WILL KILL YOU IF YOU DON’T WATCH IT. DIIIIIIIEEEEEEE.”, so I figure I’ll start it at some point.… Except for the fact that it doesn’t sound appealing at all.
You know who’s appealing? Justin Bartha from “National Treasure”. I could eat him. Because he’s so short. (Not of Mini-Me proportions, but … close enough).
Well, no, I don’t have class at 7:30 in the morning. I’m just … up at 7:30 in the morning TO GO TO CLASS. As in I leave at half past seven to make it TO class. (Stupid school’s an hour-long bus ride away. EVEN WITH NO TRANSITIONS.)
Ahahahaa, *giggles*, all I’ve been doing as of late is being completely unproductive. And YES, I got your last email. And YES, I’ll reply to it soon. (Actually, I started it today, but … never really got past two paragraphs. And don’t worry, m’dear, you’re getting an email EQUIVALENT to my life story in about a day).
I’ll definitely try it again. After I sift through the monster that’s currently my inbox. ^^
I’VE MISSED YOU. <3
irugnotmis!
A tearjearker? Really? I’m not usually one to cry during lover’s spats, but I’ll cry when there are parent-child arguments and during other stuff like that.
… Yes, I’m odd. Ha.
… But I think I’ll try it out. Granted the first episode’s REALLY good (I usually gage dramas by the first episode. Then, it’s up to my interest in the drama to carry me through).
Haha, the compliments were well-deserved. ;]
You are terrible at updating. But yes, WE NEED TO TALK. Talk, as in “we need to have a random convo.” not “i’m breaking up with you”
Monday or Tuesday night is fine with me. Let’s make it….after 9/10? I’ll try get all my hw done before then xPP
